Novena to the Immaculate Conception - Day 2

Novena for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Nov. 29th-Dec.7th)

Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception – December 8th

Day 2 – November 30 – Feast of Saint Andrew the Apostle

Prayers-

O Virgin Immaculate, Mother of God and my Mother, from thy sublime height turn upon me thine eyes of pity. Filled with confidence in thy goodness and knowing full well thy power, I beseech thee to extend to me thine assistance in the journey of life, which is so full of dangers for my soul. And in order that I may never be the slave of the devil through sin, but may ever live with my heart humble and pure, I entrust myself wholly to thee. I consecrate my heart to thee for ever, my only desire being to love thy Divine Son Jesus. Mary, none of thy devout servants has ever perished; may I too be saved. Amen.

O Mary, thou didst enter the world without stain; do thou obtain for me from God, that I may leave it without sin. Ave Maria…

O Lord, we humbly beseech thy Majesty, that even as Thou didst give thy blessed Apostle Andrew to thy Church to be a teacher and a ruler on earth, so, now that he is with thee, he may continually make intercession for us. Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Reading-

“A woman came to a house of our little Congregation in this kingdom to let one of the Fathers know that her husband had not been to confession for many years, and the poor creature could no longer tell by what means to bring him to his duty; for if she named confession to him, he beat her.   The Father told her to give him a picture of Mary Immaculate.  In the evening the woman once more begged her husband to go to confession; but he as usual turned a deaf ear to her entreaties.  She gave him the picture.  Behold! he had scarcely received it, when he said, "Well, when will you take me to confession, for I am willing to go?"  The wife, on seeing this instantaneous change, began to weep for joy.  In the morning he really came to our church, and when the Father asked him how long it was since he had been to confession, he answered, "Twenty-eight years."  The Father again asked him what had induced him to come that morning.  "Father," he said, "I was obstinate; but last night my wife gave me a picture of our Blessed Lady, and in the same moment I felt my heart changed, so much so, that during the whole night every moment seemed a thousand years, so great was my desire to go to confession."  He then confessed his sins with great contrition, changed his life, and continued for a long time to go frequently to confession to the same Father.

“In another place, in the diocese of Salerno, in which we were giving a mission, there was a man who bore a great hatred to another who had offended him.  One of our Fathers spoke to him that he might be reconciled; but he answered: "Father, did you ever see me at the sermon?  No, and for this very reason, I do not go.  I know that I am damned; but nothing else will satisfy me, I must have revenge."  The Father did all that he could to convert him; but seeing that he lost his time, he said, "Here, take this picture of our Blessed Lady."  The man at first replied, "But what is the use of this picture?"  But no sooner had he taken it, than, as if he had never refused to be reconciled, he said to the missionary, "Father, is anything else required besides reconciliation?—I am willing."  The following morning was fixed for it.  When, however, the time came, he had again changed, and would do nothing.  The Father offered him another picture, but he refused it; but at length, with great reluctance, took it, when, behold! he scarcely had possession of it than he immediately said.  Now let us be quick; where is Mastrodati?" and he was instantly reconciled with him, and then went to confession.”

Novena to the Immaculate Conception - Day 1

Novena for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Nov. 29th-Dec.7th)
Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception – December 8th

Day 1 – November 29 – Commemoration of Saint Saturninus

Prayers-

O Virgin Immaculate, who wast pleasing in the Lord's sight and didst become His Mother, look graciously upon the wretched who implore thy mighty patronage. The wicked serpent, against whom the primal curse was hurled, continues none the less to wage war and to lay snares for the unhappy children of Eve. Ah, do thou, our blessed Mother, our Queen and Advocate, who from the first instant of thy conception didst crush the head of our enemy, receive the prayers that we unite single-heartedly to thine and conjure thee to offer at the throne of God, that we may never fall into the snares that are laid for us, in such wise that we may all come to the haven of salvation; and in the midst of so many dangers may holy Church and the fellowship of Christians everywhere sing once more the hymn of deliverance, victory and peace. Amen.

To thee, O Virgin Mother, who wast never touched by any spot of Original or actual sin, I commend and entrust the purity of my heart.  Ave Maria…

O God, by Whose mercy we keep the birth-day of thy blessed martyr Saturninus, grant us also succour for his sake. Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Reading –

Taken from the Readings in the Divine Office for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception

From the Sermons of St Jerome, Priest at Bethlehem
On the Assumption

Who and what was the blessed and glorious Mary, always a Virgin, hath been revealed by God by the message of an Angel, in these words, Hail, thou that art full of grace, the Lord is with thee blessed art thou among women. It was fitting that a fulness of grace should be poured into that Virgin who hath given to God glory and to man a Saviour, who hath brought peace to earth, who hath given faith to the Gentiles, who hath killed sin, who hath given law to life, who hath made the crooked ways straight. Verily, she is full of grace. To others grace cometh measure by measure; in Mary grace dwelleth at once in all fulness. Verily, she is full of grace. We believe that the holy Fathers and Prophets had grace; but they were not full of grace. But into Mary came a fulness of all the grace which is in Christ, albeit otherwise (than as it is in Him.) Therefore is it said Blessed art thou among women, that is, Blessed art thou above all women. The fulness of blessing in Mary utterly neutralized in her any effects of the curse of Eve. In her praise Solomon writeth in the Song of Songs (2:10) Rise up, my dove, my fair one, for the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. And again, Come from Lebanon, my Spouse, come, thou shalt be crowned. (SofS 4:8)

Not unjustly then is she bidden to come from' Lebanon, for Lebanon is so named on account of its stainless and glistening whiteness. The earthly Lebanon is white with snow, but the lonely heights of Mary's holiness are white with purity and grace, brilliantly fair, whiter far than snow, sparkling with the gifts of the Holy Ghost she is undefiled like a dove, all clean, all upright, full of grace and truth. She is full of mercy, and of the righteousness that hath looked down from heaven, and therefore is she without stain because in her hath never been any corruption. She hath compassed a man in her womb, saith holy Jeremiah, but she conceived not by the will of fallen man. The Lord, saith the Prophet, hath created a new thing in the earth; a woman shall compass a man. (31:22) Verily, it is a new thing. Verily, it was a new work of power, greater than all other works, when God, Whom the world cannot bear, and Whom no man shall see and live, entered the lodging of her womb, breaking not the blissful cloister of her virgin flesh. And in her body He was borne, the Infinite inclosed within her womb. And from her womb He came forth, so that it was fulfilled which was spoken of the Prophet Ezekiel, saying, This gate shall be shut, it shall not be opened, and no man shall enter in by it; because the Lord, the God of Israel, hath entered in by it, therefore it shall be shut. (44:2) Hence also in the Song of Songs it is said of her (4:12) A garden enclosed is my sister, my spouse, a garden enclosed, a fountain sealed, thy perfumes are a garden of delights. Verily a garden of delights, filled with the perfumes of all flowers, rich with the sweet savour of grace. And the most holy Virgin herself is a garden enclosed, whereinto sin and Satan have never entered to sully the blossoms, a fountain sealed, sealed with the seal of the Trinity.

Prayer of Saint Alphonsus Liguori to Our Lady the Immaculate Conception
Ah, my Immaculate Lady!  I rejoice with thee on seeing thee enriched with so great purity.  I thank, and, resolve always to thank, our common Creator for having preserved thee from every stain of sin; and I firmly believe this doctrine, and am prepared and swear even to lay down my life, should this be necessary, in defense of this thy so great and singular privilege of being conceived immaculate.  I would that the whole world knew thee and acknowledged thee as being that beautiful "Dawn" which was always illumined with divine light; as that chosen "Ark" of salvation, free from the common shipwreck of sin; that perfect and immaculate "Dove" which thy divine Spouse declared thee to be; that "enclosed Garden" which was the delight of God; that "sealed Fountain" whose waters were never troubled by an enemy; and finally, as that "white Lily," which thou art, and who, though born in the midst of the thorns of the children of Adam, all of whom are conceived in sin, and the enemies of God, wast alone conceived pure and spotless, and in all things the beloved of thy Creator.  Permit me, then, to praise thee also as thy God himself has praised thee:  Thou art all fair, and there is not a spot in thee (Cant. 4:7).  O most pure Dove, all fair, all beautiful, always the friend of God.  O how beautiful art thou, my beloved! How beautiful art thou! (Cant. 4:1).  Ah, most sweet, most amiable, immaculate Mary, thou who art so beautiful in the eyes of thy Lord,—ah, disdain not to cast thy compassionate eyes on the wounds of my soul, loathsome as they are.  Behold me, pity me, heal me.  O beautiful loadstone of hearts, draw also my miserable heart to thyself.  O thou, who from the first moment of thy life didst appear pure and beautiful before God, pity me, who not only was born in sin, but have again since baptism stained my soul with crimes.  What grace will God ever refuse thee, who chose thee for his daughter, his Mother, and Spouse, and therefore preserved thee from every stain, and in his love preferred thee to all other creatures?  I will say, in the words of St. Philip Neri, "Immaculate Virgin, thou hast to save me."  Grant that I may always remember thee; and thou, do thou never forget me.  The happy day, when I shall go to behold thy beauty in Paradise, seems a thousand years off; so much do I long to praise and love thee more than I can now do, my Mother, my Queen, my beloved, most beautiful, most sweet, most pure, Immaculate Mary.  Amen.

Prayer of Saint Louis Marie de Montfort to Our Lady
Hail Mary, beloved Daughter of the Eternal Father. Hail Mary, admirable Mother of the Son. Hail Mary, faithful Spouse of the Holy Ghost. Hail Mary, my Mother, my loving Mistress, my powerful sovereign. Hail, my joy, my glory, my heart and my soul. Thou art all mine by mercy, and I am thine by justice. But I am not yet sufficiently thine. I now give myself wholly to thee without keeping anything back for myself or others. If thou seest anything in me which does not belong to thee, I beseech thee to take it and make thyself the absolute Mistress of all that is mine.

Destroy in me all that may displease God; root it up and bring it to nought. Place and cultivate in me everything that is pleasing to thee. May the light of thy faith dispel the darkness of my mind. May thy profound humility take the place of my pride; may thy sublime contemplation check the distractions of my wandering imagination. May the continuous sight of God fill my memory with His Presence; may the burning love of thy heart inflame the lukewarmness of mine. May thy virtues take the place of my sins; may thy merits be my only adornment in the sight of God and make up for all that is wanting in me. Finally, dearly beloved Mother, grant, if it be possible, that I may have no other spirit but thine to know Jesus, and His Divine Will; that I may have no other soul but think to praise and glorify God; that I may have no other heart but thine to love God with a love as pure and ardent as thine.

I do not ask thee for visions, revelations, sensible devotions, or spiritual pleasures. It is thy privilege to see God clearly, it is thy privilege to enjoy heavenly bliss; it is thy privilege to triumph gloriously in heaven at the right hand of thy Son and to hold absolute sway over angels, men, and demons.

It is thy privilege to dispose of all the gifts of God, just as thou willest. Such, O heavenly Mary, the 'best part', which the Lord has given thee, and which shall never be taken away from thee--and this thought fills my heart with joy. As for my part here below, I wish for no other than that which was thine, to believe sincerely without spiritual pleasures, to suffer joyfully without human consolation, to die continually to myself without respite, and to work zealously and unselfishly for thee until death, as the humblest of thy servants. The only grace I beg thee, for me, is that every moment of the day, and every moment of my life, I may say, "Amen, so be it, to all that thou art doing in heaven. Amen, so be it, to all thou didst do while on earth. Amen, so be it, to all thou art doing in my soul," so that thou alone mayest fully glorify Jesus in me for time and eternity. Amen.

Novena Prayer
Thou art all fair, O Mary,
The Original Stain is not in thee.
Thou art the glory of Jerusalem,
Thou, the joy of Israel,
Thou, the great honor of our people
Thou, the advocate of sinners.
O Mary,
O Mary,
Virgin most prudent,
Mother most merciful,
Pray for us,
Intercede for us with our Lord Jesus Christ.

Act of Homage to Christ, our God and our King

Act of Homage to Christ, our God and our King

O sweet Saviour and Redeemer of mankind, Jesus Christ, who in the impenetrable designs of thine infinite wisdom bearest with the audacity of the impious and sufferest the violence of the wicked, reserving to thyself the sovereign right of judging the impious man and his perverse works, turn thy merciful regard upon thy children, who in the blindness of their hearts have turned from Thee in rebellion. With the eyes of a Father, and with the power of the sovereign King of the Universe, stretch forth thy hand to bless and regenerate modern society, which is rebelliously turning its back upon Thee, the King of Kings, Lord of Lords. Be moved to compassion for thy people, whom Thou hast purchased with thy Blood, regenerated with thy grace, and exalted with thy love. Thou hast given them true liberty, Thou hast called them to the inheritance of thy Father, Thou hast numbered them among thy brethren; but in the delirium of their rebellion they have preferred the slavery of Satan, and live in abject misery, without joy, without hope.

O my Lord Jesus Christ, King of eternal glory, restorer of all things in heaven and on earth, supreme and omnipotent, who with infinite wisdom reunitest at thy feet things scattered and dispersed; enlighten the Kings of the earth, the rulers of nations; instill thy spirit into all civil institutions, into every form of government, into laws and armies; grant that all the powers of earth may recognize in Thee the majesty of the eternal God, the source from which all authority is derived; illuminate the nations that they may understand that Thou art the origin of rights and duties, that it is through Thee that the Kings of the earth rule, and that it is to Thee that Kings and people alike owe obedience.

O most sweet Jesus, who hast deigned to descend into this valley of tears, and to dwell with us, suffering and dying for the salvation of us sinners, and who in an excess of charity hast set up thy abode in the midst of men, hidden under the sacramental species, and who in the fullness of the Godhead, corporally present in our tabernacles, makest thyself the food and life of our souls; oh, receive the humble but sincere and profound homage of our hearts, offered in reparation for the falling away of the rebellious. We firmly believe in Thee and all that the faith infused into our hearts by the Holy Spirit has revealed to us about Thee. We see in Thee the beginning and the end of all existing things, we adore Thee as the one true God, we wish to live only for Thee and in thy service. Do Thou, O Lord, save our brethren, reunite the scattered members of modern society gone astray, that we as brethren may together be one with Thee, as Thou art one with thy Father in Heaven. May thy will be done by all and in everything. May thy Majesty shine forth on the throne of thy earthly dominion, and the world confess Thee to be the true Son of God, through whom all things were created.

O Jesus, God of love, set free from his chains thy Vicar, the successor of Peter; re-establish him in the exercise of that liberty which Thou thyself didst give him, together with the supreme keys, that he might effectually carry on thy work of regenerating mankind; and so hasten on that longed-for day, in which Thou wilt be glorified by the return of Society to its paternal home. Gather together, O King of the nations, the sheep and the lambs under the care of the one shepherd. O Lord, do not abandon us; we are thy children, we love Thee; recognize us still as thy children, unworthy, yet ever thine; save us, and together with us, save Kings, Rulers, and Nations. Amen.

Prayers for the Poor Souls in Purgatory

Saint Gertrude the Great Chaplet

Our Lord told St. Gertrude the Great that the following prayer would release 1,000 Souls from Purgatory each time it is said. The prayer was later extended to include living sinners as well.

Say this chaplet using regular Rosary beads.

Begin with the Apostles' Creed, one Our Father, three Hail Marys and a Glory Be to the Father just as with Our Lady's Rosary.

On the five decades, say the prayer below for the Holy Souls on each Hail Mary bead and the Our Father on each separator bead between the decades.

"Eternal Father, I offer Thee the most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal Church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen."

(Approval and Recommendation: M. Cardinal Pahiarca at Lisbon, Portugal, March 4, 1936)

Requiem Aeternam
(From the Raccolta #582 [S. P. Ap., May 17, 1927])
Requiem aeternam dona ei (eis), Domine, et lux perpetua luceat ei (eis). Requiescat (-ant) in pace. Amen.
Eternal rest grant unto him/her (them), O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him/her (them). May he/she (they) rest in peace. Amen.

Domine Iesu Christe
(Raccolta #597, from the Roman Missal [S. P. Ap., Sept. 12, 1935])
Amen.
O Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, deliver the souls of all the faithful departed from the pains of hell and from the bottomless pit; deliver them out of the lion's mouth, lest hell should swallow them up, lest they fall into the outer darkness; but let Thy standard-bearer, Saint Michael, bring them back into Thy holy light, which Thou didst promise of old to Abraham and to his seed. Amen.

Deus, qui nos patrem et matrem honorare
(From the Raccolta #599 [S. P. Ap. Sept. 12, 1935], from the Roman Missal.)
Amen.
O God, who hast commanded us to honor our father and mother: in Thy mercy have pity on the souls of my father and mother (or the soul of my father, or the soul of my mother) and forgive them their trespasses (or forgive him his trespasses, or forgive her her trespasses); and make me to see them (or him, or her) again in the joy of everlasting brightness. Amen.

Pro defuncta nominatim/For a Deceased Woman
(From the Raccolta #600 [S. P. Ap., March 14, 1923 and June 24, 1936])
Quaesumus, Domine, pro tua pietate miserere animae famulae tuae N., et a contagiis mortalitatis exutam, in aeternae salvationis partem restitue. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.
We beseech Thee, O Lord, according to Thy loving-kindness, have mercy upon the soul of Thy handmaiden N., and now that she is set free from the defilements of this mortal flesh, restore her to her heritage of everlasting salvation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pro defuncto nominatim/For a Deceased Man
(From the Raccolta #600 [S. P. Ap., March 14, 1923 and June 24, 1936])
Amen.
Incline Thine ear, O Lord, unto our prayers, wherein we humbly pray Thee to show Thy mercy upon the soul of Thy servant N., whom Thou hast commanded to pass out of this world, that Thou wouldst place him in the region of peace and light, and bid him be a partaker with Thy Saints. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

De Profundis – Psalm 129
Psalm Traditionally Prayed for the Dead
De profundis clamavi ad te Domine Domine exaudi vocem meam fiant aures tuae intendentes in vocem deprecationis meae si iniquitates observabis Domine Domine quis sustinebit quia apud te propitiatio est propter legem tuam sustinui te Domine sustinuit anima mea in verbum eius speravit anima mea in Domino a custodia matutina usque ad noctem speret Israhel in Domino quia apud Dominum misericordia et copiosa apud eum redemption et ipse redimet Israhel ex omnibus iniquitatibus eius.

Out of the depths I have cried to thee, O Lord: Lord, hear my voice. Let thy ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication.  If thou, O Lord, wilt mark iniquities: Lord, who shall stand it.  For with thee there is merciful forgiveness: and by reason of thy law, I have waited for thee, O Lord. My soul hath relied on his word:  My soul hath hoped in the Lord. From the morning watch even until night, let Israel hope in the Lord.  Because with the Lord there is mercy: and with him plentiful redemption.  And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.
